Getting to know Golf - A Beginners Story - 2008-03-10 00:00:00
I have been playing golf, on and off, most of my life....starting with rousing games of Miniature Golf, when I was knee high to a grasshopper, to my Dad taking us kids to the driving range and finally, to a full 18 hole golf course when I was 12. He loves the game and has passed his love of golf onto my sister, brother and I. Admittedly, I am no Tiger Woods, but I do enjoy the concept of golf, the health benefit of golf and playing the game, even tho I am not all that good at it. Recently, I decided to renew my relationship with golf, and made it my goal in life to learn as much as I could about everything from golf tees to why golf is so popular of a game. What I found was fascinating, so I will share, you don't need to thank me yet though. To play a professional game of golf, of course you will need professional type golf equipment. So head out to your local sports store or just peruse some online golf supply stores. You can find some great deals online also, even as far as bargain and discounted items to finding used golf clubs and also don't forget to check EBay. As a resource for used golf items, it is great. You will need some good golf balls, tees, which can be made of a wide range of materials, from wood to graphite, golf bag, golf gloves, grips and shoes, and of course the all important great golf clubs, including but not limited to, drivers, irons, putters, and wedges....whew, no wonder I was too tired to actually go play after just shopping for the things I will need to renew and hone my golf playing abilities. I had better start playing tomorrow. Once I actually do start trying to find my new favorite golf course, I will probably start off slow, with a 9 hole course, instead of an 18 hole course. After all, I wouldn't want to start too big. There are many ways to find awesome golf courses, from letting your fingers do the walking through your local yellow pages, to, of course, the Internet. You can find a gorgeous array of lush greens to play on, with or without caddies and golf cart. I will be walking, since the exercise aspect is a huge plus to me. Some course are more sprawling than others, so that will add into my final decision. I also love to find lovely landscapes for my eyes to feast on while I play and/or walk the golf course of my dreams, so that will also be a factor. Granted not everyone will care about the ambiance or views as much as I do, but being an avid nature nut and hiker does make this a point of importance in my life. You can also find some great sites on the Internet with golf hints and tips and ways to make your game better. Many of them will be trying to sell you their AMAZING book and secrets, but you can also find many more free sites willing to share their expertise on the subject. So my suggestion, because golf is such an easy way to incorporate fitness into you life and also gain a skill that you will have forever, is just go for it. You may need a few lessons, but it will be worth it in the long run. |
